Spine Deformity Treatment

A spinal deformity occurs when your spine varies by more than 10 degrees from “healthy” curvature. A Normal spine provides support for the body. These give help to the person stand, sit and walk, bend, and twist. Spinal Deformity occurs when the curves of the spine differ from the normal, gentle S-shape seen from the side. Spinal deformity includes pain, weakness, numbness, tingling, loss of function, and pulmonary and cardiac problems.

What is the type of Spine Deformity?

The Spine deformity includes following different deformity

  • Scoliosis: It is an abnormal side to side curvature. It is easiest to see scoliosis of the spine from the back. A scoliosis curve of the spine can be seen from the back and can lead to a deformity in the rib cage as well as the spine
  • Lordosis: It is a Deeper than normal inward curve of the spine. This often occurs as a side effect of kyphosis. Hyper-lordosis, or swayback, causes the lower back to swoop inward and the abdomen to jut outward.
  • Kyphosis: It is an exaggerated forward curvature of the spine. The word kyphosis is from the Greek kyphosis, which means hump, and the condition is also known as humpback, round back, or dowager’s hump. Kyphosis or abnormal kyphosis is a greater-than-normal outward curvature of the spine, usually in the upper back and sometimes into the cervical spine (neck).
  • Flat back Syndrome: This condition develops when the spine loses its natural curvature. This may sound benign. After all, the spine has become “straight.” But, the flat back syndrome can cause patients to pitch forward, creating serious issues with walking.

What are the Symptoms of Spinal Deformity?

The signs and symptoms of a spinal deformity depend on the location of the abnormal spine segment. The patient has seen the various following symptoms of the spinal deformity

  • Pain at the Spine
  • Mis-alignment of the spine
  • Problem when walk, sit and move
  • loss of sense at the spine
  • Neck, Back or leg pain
  • uneven hip, shoulders or leg length
  • Herniated disc problem
  • Physical signs of spine deformity

How is spinal deformity treated?

Treatment of spinal deformity includes backing the spine as normal alignment as possible. This also usually relieves any pain, weakness, or loss of sensation associated with abnormal alignment. The treatment can mainly be done by the following methods.

  • Bracing: This is the best spinal deformity treatment done by orthopaedics. These methods can use for younger patients where the spine may be in growing condition. In adults bracing helps to reduce pain.
  • Physical Therapy: A Mainstay of treatment is the flexibility and core strengthens of the spine. Which is done by physiotherapy? It is an active process, not simply limited to passive modalities like heat, ice, or massage.
  • Pain Management injection: Oral medications or vitamin supplements to treat pain or underlying conditions like osteoporosis
  • Surgical Correction: The Spinal Deformity and Scoliosis Program at the Weill Cornell Medicine Centre for Comprehensive Spine Care includes expert spine surgeons along with their team of physicians, nurses, physical therapists, and pain management specialists who provide comprehensive, integrated care for patients with spinal deformities. Patients receive a complete continuum of care from diagnosis to treatment and recovery.
